Johann Crüger (1598-1662) was a composer, cantor, and private tutor in Berlin, Germany. He published sacred music prolifically and edited the most widely-used Lutheran hymnal of the 17th century. Crüger strongly promoted congregational singing, composing many beloved Lutheran hymn tunes.
