Seth Calvisius (1556-1615) was a composer and astronomer. He served as kantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig a little over 100 years before J.S. Bach would hold that position. His Harmonia Cantionum Ecclesiasticarum contains many straightforward settings of well-known Lutheran hymns.
