Jesus, Priceless Treasure (BWV 227.1 & 11)

Setting by Johann Sebastian Bach

“Jesus, Priceless Treasure” (Jesu, meine Freude), text by Johann Franck (1653). Tune by Johann Crüger (1653). Chorale setting by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 227.1 & 11). Homophonic, SATB.
Recording of stanzas 1 and 6. Soprano: Hannah Engwall, Alto: Anna Hahn, Tenor: Andrew Richard, Bass: Nathanael Hahn. January, 2023.

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote an eleven-movement motet of the hymn Jesus, Priceless Treasure by Johann Franck. The odd-numbered movements of the motet are the six stanzas of the hymn, and the even-numbered movements are from Romans 8 (verses 1, 2, 9, 10, and 11). Bach used the same chorale setting for the first and final movements (stanzas 1 and 6 of the hymn), and we are pleased to present that chorale setting here. Note that the text within the score differs slightly from that in the recording. Both versions of the text are in the public domain and trace back to Catherine Winkworth.
