Martin Luther’s famous versification of Psalm 130, Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (“From Depths of Woe I Cry to Thee”), has been appearing in Lutheran hymnals for nearly 500 years, from the very first Lutheran hymnbooks published in the 1520s up to the present day. We offer here Johann Walter’s setting of “From Depths of Woe” from the Geystliche gesangk Buchleyn of 1524, the very first set of Lutheran choral part books.
